Trying my hand at writing fiction

A few years ago, I started writing some micro-fiction. It was in the creepypasta vein, featuring a mysterious entity called The Messenger. They would appear in someone's dream, and tell them they'd never see the person they were dreaming about again.

The inspiration came from a figure a co-worker had in a dream, foretelling the death of someone in their family. I changed the appearance of this figure a bit, and the first two pieces were based on losses from my own life. I did write one with a version of my co-worker, which see approved. A fourth, fictional story based on someone else at work was written. Then I put it aside for about a year.

I had originally planned to write another, final story, were the first two characters die, and a new character has a dream where The Messenger tells them of their deaths. By the time I came back to this, I made changes to the original four pieces. I modified the look of The Messenger a little, and edited the text to reflect that. I also took out something in each story when the protagonist of each story see The Messenger again. I did this to fit the direction the newer material ended up going in.

Instead of keeping up the creepypasta story vibe, I went more into a weird fiction direction with the newer material. The protagonist of the first two stories (and the narrator of the two after that) has now become obsessed with The Messenger, and tries to find out more. In doing so, he hatches a crazy plan to confront it in the Dream Lands (where it supposedly resides), and imprison it.

I went a little Lovecraft, etc in the follow ups, and my edits on the earlier material brought the entity of The Messenger more in line with the weird fiction vibe of Lovecraft and his contemporaries. The Messenger has tenuous ties to a section of The Mythos now, so I wanted the stories to eventually reveal that.

I'm fairly pleased with the results so far. I'm in the middle of the story where Derek, the main protagonist, finally confronts The Messenger. There will likely be one last piece after that, then that will be pretty much done.

My plan is to compile it all, and release it for free. I signed up for the Kindle author program, and I've been putting the stories on Wattapad for eventual release. I'm looking into Smashwords as well, but I will likely do that last, as it seems a bit involved putting together the document for them (since my processor skills are basic, I need to take my time on that one)

I found a site to make ebook covers, and whipped this up as the cover for the collection:

Besides this, I have other fiction I'm working on. I've been writing micro-fiction featuring various public domain comic characters fighting beings from the Mythos, including a new villain whose origin is connected to a Mythos race. There's also a new hero tied to The King in Yellow, and a crime fighting Luchador I created decades ago. I'm also working on a story that's more dark fantasy, with the lead character inspired by my first ever D&D character from the 70's. It's also got some Mythos elements.

I also have another piece I wrote, but this one is non-mythos in nature. It's more creepypasta, as I created an entity as part of my Halloween Horrors line. The inspiration was a great piece of stock art I bought. Needless to say, that one is a bit darker than everything else I've written. I'm keeping that under wraps for now, but I'm pleased with the direction that is going in.

So that wraps up this post. Only took me over a year to write a new blog post!
